What to wear for family pictures

March 10, 2018

I often get asked by clients for advice on what they should wear to their shoots. And while I’m a big advocate for feeling comfortable there are a few things to consider.

Colour Scheme

When I say colour scheme I don’t mean that everyone has to wear the same colour, that’s a little 90s and you may start to resemble the Backstreet Boys. I would suggest deciding if you prefer bold or subtle colours to start with.

Subtle colours are usual more natural colours, white, beige, grey, light blue etc. This ensures everyone’s clothing has the same strength and no single person will stand out.

OR if you do prefer bold colours, choose two or three common colours. Like red, yellow, green or purple where everyone is incorporating it into their outfit in some way, to help bring everything together.

Formal vs Casual

It’s always good to set the tone so that everyone either looks casual or formal, rather than that one person who turns up in shorts and feels awkward, or grandad that turns up in a suit.

Deciding between formal or casual, think about the location where your photos are being taken. If you’re in a forest or paddock, a suit and cocktail dress might look out of place. But a manicured garden or city landscape that suits perfectly.

The Weather

If it’s the middle of winter, don’t try and dress to make it look like the photos were taken in summer. The shivering, goosebumps and tense shoulders all come through in photos.

It’s much better to be warm and comfortable if it’s a winters day. The same goes for a summers day. You don’t want to be sweaty and have a shiny forehead so dress to keep cool!

Most of all be comfortable!

Be comfortable and confident what you’re wearing. When you’re spending the time and effort on photos you want them to be something that every time you look at you love!
